Intruder By: Lisa Cooper
“Patrick.” His name is a whisper on the wind and it makes him toss in his sleep, squinting his closed eyes as if he were trying to see something far away. “Patrick.” There it is again, though it seems closer this time. Like someone is whispering directly into his ear. And then there is a hand slowly moving up his body from the inside of his thigh and someone pressing intimately against his side. “Patrick,” the voice whispers again in his ear, a wet tongue tracing the outline of it, “Wake up. Melantha is here.”
“Melantha!” He gasps, shooting up straight as a bolt in his sleeping bag, his heart pounding wildly in his chest. Sighing, he tries his best to think of calming thoughts, hoping they will slow his madly racing heart. It has been forever since he’d last thought of his cheating wife. In the times he has thought of her, he’s thought of the numerous times he could have cheated on her, and how every time he’s decided against it, no matter how tempting the offer presented to him.
“Awh, what’s wrong love?” A voice purrs behind him, startling him. Choking on a gasp, Patrick turns to see a half dressed, dark-haired and pale skinned woman lying very close to him. Swallowing the lump that has formed in his throat, he stares at her in a nervous fear as he slowly tries to scoot away from her.
“M-Melantha…” He squeaks, suddenly wishing he had a shirt on when one of her hands came up and started tracing patterns on his chest. “W-what are you doing here?” Even though he's furious at her for what she has done to him, he is also absolutely terrified of her. Something about her is wrong, makes him think that she belongs below ground instead of in the heavens where the other gods reside.
“Well I came to see you love. Do you have a problem with that?” Her voice is a low purr and her red eyes glow with the light that marks her as a god. Grinning, she slowly gets on her hands and knees and crawls closer to Patrick who is too busy trying to get away from her to notice that one of his pack mates is stirring awake.
“Mmmmph… Patrick…” Paka’s mumbled words draw Melantha’s curious gaze away from Patrick long enough for him to put some distance between them. “Patrick…” She murmurs, sitting up slightly and rubbing sleep out of her eyes, “Who’re you talking-“ A yawn muffles the rest of her words as she tries to comprehend the situation at hand.
“Sleep.” A fine, almost imperceptible mist curls around Paka as she yawns and tries to fight the growing urge to go back to sleep. But eventually she succumbs and falls back into a deep, dreamless sleep, completely unaware of everything going on around her. Smiling, Melantha turns her gaze on the one that caused Paka to fall back asleep and angry amber eyes meet mischievous red ones.
“Leave.” The word is a guttural growl rumbling out of Adrian’s throat and chest as he glares at the cougar goddess, his own eyes glowing with the same light that marks him as a god. “Now.” The word is clipped, angry and Patrick’s usually playful green eyes widen in surprise and fear as he glances between his estranged wife and best friend.
“Oh Baku, you silly little puppy,” the goddess purrs, sliding over to the angry man and hooking her arms around his neck, her dark red lips hovering close to his. “You can’t hurt me.” Her words are whispered and issued as a challenge, a threat and he reacts as such.
“Get off me!” A snarl escapes his mouth as he pushes Melantha off, glaring down at her as he stands up and brushes himself off in disgust. “You are not allowed to use my true name. Here I am known only as Adrian and if you address me at all that is how it should be done.”
“Humph. I don’t know what Luci saw in you, but it’s probably a good thing she left and didn’t have to see what you’ve become.” Adrian doubles over, as if he’s been punched in the stomach, gasping in pain at the words the cursed woman had spoken. Luci? What did this flea-bitten woman know of his beloved wife?! She smiles as he lifts his head to glare at her, knowing what he is thinking.
“Awh, the wittle mutt wants to know my connection to his wifey, is that it?” Harsh laughter fills the air as his lips lift in a silent snarl, a warning for her to stop her games. “Well too damn bad!” Her red eyes blaze with an insane hatred as she stands up to leave, kicking Adrian as she walks out of the cave. “I am not telling a mutt like you anything important. Patrick, you’re welcome to come home anytime you wish. And please, bring your little girlfriend along, I would love to… Play with her.”
“Whore.” Adrian spits as he watches his friend’s wife disappear into the night, disgusted with her and everything that she’s caused. “Don’t you dare apologize.” Behind him, he hears Patrick’s mouth snap shut, complying with his order. Looks like things are going to be a bit more crazy from now on.
